Do you have a tubular breast? Tubular breast symptoms
The so-called "Snoopy breast" is a growth disorder of the connective tissue. The lower part of the breast is less developed than the upper part. This is where the colloquial name "tube or trunk breast" comes from. In addition, the areolas are sometimes excessively large. Because the mammary gland tissue is underdeveloped, full breastfeeding is often not possible. The cause could be a genetic predisposition.
There are four degrees of tubular breast:
- Grade 1: The tissue of one of the two lower quadrants of the breast is underdeveloped, but the areola is normal.
- Grade 2Both lower quadrants are underdeveloped. The breast is small but the areola looks normal.
- Grade 3: In addition to the missing tissue, there is a clear skin deficit. The nipple is tilted downwards, the areola is enlarged.
- Grade 4The entire breast is underdeveloped. The areola is particularly large and the mammary gland protrudes.

The so-called trunk breast is congenital. Adolescents in particular suffer greatly from the malformation and often think about an operation. Basically, there is no minimum age for an operation, but the breast growth should be completed. This is usually the case from the age of 20.
Which breast correction makes sense and when?
Every breast is individual. Depending on the extent of the deformity, different treatments may be considered. In the case of a small, pointed breast, a breast augmentation is an option to replace missing tissue. Sometimes, however, it also makes sense to remove excess skin with a lifting operation. In severe forms of trunk breast, a reduction of the areola is also worthwhile in order to achieve an aesthetic appearance.
The following interventions are possible:
- Breast augmentation with implants
Usually, teardrop-shaped implants are best suited, as they compensate well for volume deficits in the lower area of the breast. You yourself help to determine the new shape of your breast. You can see the result in advance with the help of a 3D simulation. After the operation, you will have a natural-looking breast that no longer shows the former deformity. You will be given a general anaesthetic for the operation.
- Breast augmentation with own fat
If a moderate enlargement of the breast is sufficient to compensate for the tissue deficits, autologous fat is an alternative. Prof. Noah removes some fat from the hips or abdomen to purify the cells and inject them into the breast. The procedure usually takes 2-3 hours. A general anaesthetic is usually not necessary, as twilight sleep is sufficient. After several months, you will see how many fat cells have grown. In some cases it makes sense to repeat the procedure to build up even more volume.
- Breast lift & areola reduction
In the case of oversized areolas, a reduction can be useful. With a circular incision, excess tissue is removed. To achieve a beautiful shape, Prof. Noah sometimes also removes sagging skin.
Do the health insurance companies cover the costs?
Since malformations are often accompanied by psychological stress, some health insurances cover part of the treatment. It is best to clarify the details of cost coverage directly with your insurance company. The conditions are often very different.
Complications can occur during any operation. They are rare, but it is worth having follow-up cost insurance just in case. Otherwise, the health insurance companies may charge you for the follow-up costs. (§52 Social Code).
